Each social media network is a critical communication and customer service tool that’s essential for businesses to stay relevant and competitive in today’s environment.

Australian social media statistics for December 2017 show there were 15,000,000 monthly active users on Facebook, 9,000,000 active monthly users on Instagram, 4,200,000 on LinkedIn and 3,000,000 active monthly users on Twitter. The statistics from these four influential platforms show how powerful they are and why businesses need to integrate social media into their business to drive business outcomes.

There are so many options available for businesses to connect, build trust and develop long-term relationships with their clients and target market online. However, all these options bring challenges.

I’ve spoken to a few groups of business owners over the last two weeks and one question kept popping up.

Do I need to be on every social media network?

My answer, no you don’t.

There’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, Google Plus, WhatsApp and Periscope just to name a few. Now consider all the other social networks and don’t forget the new ones that will be developed in the future. The list keeps getting longer and longer and you can see how challenging it can be to know where to spend your time online. Believing you need to be everywhere can lead to feeling overwhelmed.

Answer these 3 questions

  • Who is my target market?
  • Who is my ideal client?
  • Where do they spend time online? 

If you want results you need to use the social networks your target market is using. Focus on adding value and building relationships on those specific networks. If you’re not sure where they spend time online, ask them.

Prioritise your social media networks

Once you know which networks you’re going to use, prioritise them. First look at how much time you have to dedicate to your social media activity each day and then work out how much time you can spend on each platform. If you only have space for one platform right now, choose the platform that’s going to bring you the best results. Once you have this platform operating with a solid social media strategy, then focus on the next one.

You’re much better off doing one or two platforms well then being everywhere and not doing much at all. Posting randomly or worse still not posting or engaging at all, can damage your credibility and your reputation.

Consistency is essential for online success

Start with what you can, however, you MUST be consistent. Consistency is everything, so when you’ve worked out how much time you have, lock it in your diary.  Remember, the time you spend on social media is an investment in your community and your business.

Spend time this week reviewing the social networks you’re currently using. Are they the right ones for your business?
